Learn how to preserve your Raf tomatoes
At pepeRaf, we help you to properly preserve your Raf tomatoes, depending on how and when you are going to consume them.
Remove your Raf tomatoes from the shipping box.
Raf tomatoes release ethylene much more quickly than other tomatoes, and this release is what causes them to ripen more quickly. Therefore, remove the tomatoes from the box in which they were sent, as the ethylene concentration will be very high during transport, especially in the hottest months.
Calculate your Raf tomato consumption.
Raf tomatoes can be stored for a maximum of 3-4 days at room temperature. Therefore, leave out the tomatoes you are going to consume during these days, and put the rest in the fridge. These days can be extended if it is cold, or by following these tips.
The Raf tomato does not like heat or light.
To preserve your tomatoes without putting them in the fridge, place them in a wicker basket or similar, but with openings so that the "ethylene" can dissipate, always in a cool place where they are not exposed to light, so you can cover them with a cloth or soft cloth.
If you have no other choice, put them in the fridge.
Ideally, they should be consumed without being put in the fridge, as they may lose some flavour, but if they are kept in the fridge for several days, it is always better to put them in the fridge rather than letting them soften and lose their firmness. The ideal temperature for cold storage is 5-7 degrees, and always place them alone, without mixing them with other vegetables.
Temper your Raf tomatoes when you take them out of the fridge.
To consume your Raf tomatoes that are in the fridge, it is very important to bring them to room temperature so that they regain their aromas and other properties. Take them out of the fridge at least 3 or 4 hours before consuming them and leave them at room temperature.
These tips can help you, but keep in mind that, like most things in life, it is best to apply common sense and adapt to them in the best way possible.
Enjoy them!!
